What is DVS?
If your business or fleet operates in London, you’ve probably heard of the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) — if not, don’t worry! We got you. In this blog, we explain everything essential you need to know about DVS, how it affects you and your fleet and how Fleetek’s AI DVS Kit can help and support you stay compliant.
The DVS stands for Direct Vision Standard and is a safety protocol enforced by Transport for London (TFL) designed to reduce accidents and collisions between heavy good vehicles (HGVs) and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclist. It calculates how much the driver can see directly through their window without relying on mirrors or even cameras
Based on the level of direct vision the driver has, each vehicle over 12 tonnes is rated from zero to five stars.
The DVS Phase 2
Transport for London has updated the Direct Vision Standard in October 2024 to reveal an enhanced safety standard called the Progressive Safe System (PSS). This means operators or owners of HGVs rated below three stars will need to upgrade their vehicle’s system to a more advanced technology. Let me tell you exactly what YOU need to stay compliant and avoid those hefty fines by TFL!
1.Blind Spot Information System (BSIS)
- Must detect vulnerable road users on the nearside of the vehicle
- Must provide a real-time visual and audible alert to the the driver
- It Shouldnt Trigger for Stationary object like railings or walls
2.Moving Off Information System (MOIS)
- Must detect vulnerable road users like cyclist directly in front of the cab
- Must issue alerts to the driver before moving off
3.Camera Monitoring System
- At least one camera must provide a clear, full view of blind spots
- The image must be high-quality and clear in low light
- Monitors must be positioned in a way without obstructing the driver’s view
4.Audible Warning Sytems
- Must activate when moving off and turning left
- Clear and understandable wording
The Progressive Safe System (PSS) became mandatory in for New DVS permit applications or renewals on 28th October 2024. You will need to upgrade your system if firstly you HGV is rated 0-2 under the updated TFL criteria and if your DVS permit expires after this date.
